Graduate Quantity Surveyor

Graduate Quantity Surveyor – Commercial Office Fit Out

Location: Hull, East Yorkshire
Salary: £27,000 – £30,000 per annum

About you

You are a recent Quantity Surveying graduate looking to take the next step and build your career within the construction industry.

Ideally, you will have achieved a 2:1 degree in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related subject and be keen to put what you have learnt at university into practice.

You don't need previous experience in commercial fit out. What matters most is that you have the right attitude, a willingness to learn and a genuine interest in developing a career in Quantity Surveying.

You will be joining a contractor specialising in commercial office fit out and refurbishment, working on projects ranging from £200,000 through to £5 million.

This is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience across a variety of commercial interiors projects, working alongside experienced professionals who can help you develop your skills.

Ideally, you will live within around one hour's commute of Hull, as the role will be office based with some travel to projects when required.

Your experience

You will ideally have:

  • A 2:1 degree in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related subject

  • A genuine interest in commercial construction, office fit out and refurbishment

  • Good numerical and analytical skills

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Good communication and organisational skills

  • A willingness to learn and take responsibility

  • The ability to work as part of a wider commercial and project team

  • A full UK driving licence would be beneficial

Previous experience within commercial fit out, refurbishment or general construction would be beneficial but is not essential.

You may have completed a placement year, gained some experience with a contractor or be coming straight out of university.

The important thing is that you are keen to learn, comfortable asking questions and want to build a long-term career in the industry.

What you will be doing with your experience

You will be working alongside experienced Quantity Surveyors, supporting the commercial management of office fit out and refurbishment projects valued between £200,000 and £5 million.

These projects will involve transforming existing commercial spaces, delivering new office environments and refurbishing workplaces for clients.

You will gain exposure to different stages of the construction process, from initial procurement through to project completion and final accounts.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the commercial management of office fit out and refurbishment projects

  • Assisting with subcontractor procurement, tender enquiries and package comparisons

  • Helping to prepare valuations and cost reports

  • Monitoring project costs, budgets and expenditure

  • Assisting with variations and change control

  • Supporting the preparation of project forecasts and financial information

  • Developing relationships with subcontractors and suppliers

  • Assisting with subcontractor payments and final accounts

  • Working closely with Project Managers and Site Managers

  • Learning how to identify commercial risks and protect project profitability

  • Developing your understanding of contracts, procurement and commercial management

You won't be expected to know everything from day one.

The idea is that you will learn from the people around you, build your confidence and gradually take on more responsibility as your experience develops.

Over time, the aim will be for you to progress towards managing your own commercial packages and eventually taking responsibility for projects.

About the business

You will be joining a commercial interiors contractor based in Hull, specialising in office fit out and refurbishment projects.

The business delivers projects ranging from £200,000 to £5 million, giving you the opportunity to develop your commercial knowledge across different project sizes and requirements.

Working in commercial interiors offers a good variety of experience. Projects can move quickly, involve multiple subcontractor packages and require close communication between the commercial and operational teams.

For someone starting their career, this provides a good opportunity to understand how projects are priced, procured, delivered and commercially managed.

You will be joining a business where you can develop your knowledge of the construction process and gain practical experience that will help you progress as a Quantity Surveyor.

If you are looking for an opportunity where you can build your experience rather than simply sitting behind a desk working through spreadsheets, this could be worth a conversation.

Next steps

If you have recently graduated with a degree in Quantity Surveying or Commercial Management and are looking for an opportunity to develop your career with a commercial fit out contractor, I would be keen to speak with you.

You don't need previous fit out experience, although any construction experience would certainly be useful.

What matters is that you are willing to learn, have a good attitude and want to develop into a capable Quantity Surveyor.

Apply now and I will give you a call to talk through the role, the projects and the business in more detail.
